Marine protected areas (MPAs) are under threat, yet are refuge for over two-thirds of the ocean’s threatened species. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is rampant, with an estimated 1 in 5 fish caught illegally. And human labour rights violations at sea continue.
why
it’s challenging
~3.3 million motorized fishing vessels and ~15,000 MPAs make oversight difficult. It’s especially tough for small island nations (SIDS) and emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), tasked with enforcement across vast areas with limited human and financial resources.
