IMPACT

OceanMind’s work has benefitted more than 20 countries, global supply chains, and thousands of workers around the world.  Our programmes cover every ocean basin, spanning millions of square kilometres of protected ocean, and actively monitoring tens of thousands of vessels.

Our work has shown demonstrable improvements in fisheries compliance over the past 6 years, particularly around UK overseas territories, Costa Rica, and in Thailand.  We have helped governments reform their fisheries enforcement practices, increasing deterrence and therefore regulatory compliance in line with our theory of change.

Increased compliance leads to reduced impacts from human activity, providing space for the ocean to recover, and healthier oceans lead to improved human wellbeing across the whole planet.

Impact At a Glance

Over the past 6 years OceanMind has:

  • Monitored over 5 million square kilometres of Marine Protected Areas, including UK’s Blue Belt, helping to ensure ecosystems are free from damaging human activity and preserving biodiversity.

  • Analysed more than 500 million square kilometres of satellite imagery to detect and prevent illegal fishing globally – the equivalent of 1.4 times the surface of the whole ocean or the entire surface area of the planet.

  • As a result of our hands-on support to governments, training, capacity building, and knowledge transfer we have directly increased enforcement effectiveness and compliance awareness that in turn has increased the sustainability of fishing fleets in Costa Rica, Thailand, The Philippines, Cambodia, as well as distant water fleets in the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and Southern Oceans, representing thousands of vessels and the livelihoods of tens of thousands fisherfolk.

  • Through our implementation of the Port State Measures Agreement in Thailand we have directly ensured the legality of 6 million tonnes of tuna, which translates into around $600 million USD or millions of products entering the global market.

  • Internationally provided governments with capacity building to work efficiently and effectively to enforce their regulations resulting in a significant reduction in overfishing in Thailand, and increased fines for illegal fishing in Costa Rica.

  • Helped INTERPOL to track down and capture several high-profile vessels wanted for suspected illegal fishing and slavery, including the STS-50, F/V Nika, and the Wisdom Sea Reefer.

  • Developed and provided Seafood Supply Chain verification of responsible catch method for seafood purchased by Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, and members of the Seafood Taskforce, supporting methods that reduce impact on biodiversity (FAD-free fishing) and helping companies establish their impact on biodiversity through bycatch and habitat destruction for ESG reporting.

  • Provided direct training and knowledge transfer to over 500 enforcement practitioners worldwide.
